We will list the most famous Belgrade attractions without which a visit to our city would be incomplete.
Kalemegdan - A fortress at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava
When you visit our city, one of the first sites on your places-to-visit list will be the Belgrade Fortress, Kalemegdan, which proudly commandeers a ridge above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, and where one of the symbols of the city is located – The Victor.
Here you can take a break from lectures, learn more about the history of Belgrade, and enjoy a walk around the Kalemegdan Park that overlooks not one, but two rivers.
Kalemegdan has a long and colorful history, given that the oldest part of the fortress was built in the 1st century for the IV Legion of the Roman Empire.
The fortress has been demolished and rebuilt multiple times throughout its history, eventually acquiring its modern-day appearance that comprises three parts:
- Upper Town
- Lower Town
- Kalemegdan Park
In addition to the Victor, other attractions of the Upper Town include the Stambol Gate, monument to Despot Stefan Lazarević, and the Mehmed Paša Sokolović’s Fountain.
The Lower Town includes the Nebojša Tower, the church of Sveta Petka, and the Hammam (Turkish bath).
The Kalemegdan part is a perfect place for relaxation, where visitors can enjoy numerous monuments and sculptures, or visit the Belgrade Zoo.
Sava Promenade - An authentic experience of the Belgrade Waterfront
When you arrive to Belgrade, you cannot miss the most popular promenade by the river, better known as the Belgrade Waterfront.
This place is perfect for long walks and relaxing by the river, but it can also offer entertainment for the youngest within the Sava Play complex, or shopping in the largest shopping mall in Belgrade, Galerija.
For those who enjoy cycling, there is a bike path that leads all the way to Ada Ciganlija, the second-favorite picnic area of Belgrade people.
The sunset on the promenade is an unforgettable experience, because you can sit comfortably in one of the bars located along the promenade, and enjoy the view of the river.
The Promenade is even better during summer, offering a relaxing atmosphere, incredible views of the river, and restaurants with exquisite food.
Another thing worth mentioning is a river cruise, because it will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the Old Town from the river.
Church of Saint Sava - The largest Orthodox church in the world
The Church of Saint Sava is one of the most beautiful Belgrade attractions, and represents not only the largest place of worship of the Serbian Orthodox Church, but also the largest Orthodox church in the world.
It was built on the site where the remains of Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and one of the most venerated Serbian saints, were burned by the Ottomans in the 13th century.
Due to its magnificent size and unique shape, this church is a recognizable landmark of the Belgrade skyline, visible from all sides, and among the favorite attractions of tourists who visit Belgrade. It is also a place where the most beautiful photographs are taken.
Apart from its stunning exterior, the interior is equally impressive, containing magnificent mosaics, which, in addition to religious, also possess an immense historical significance.
The construction of this majestic church was finished after 74 years, and today, it represents one of the most impressive examples of Belgrade architecture.
Guests of Belgrade can also visit the monument to Karađorđe, the National Library, and a magnificent fountain, all of which are located in the park that surrounds the Church.
The Republic Square - The heart of the capital
The Republic Square is an authentic Belgrade spot, a symbol of history and the present, a combination of the modern and the classical, because it is surrounded both by 19th-century buildings of special architectural importance, and modern buildings from the period of ex-Yugoslavia.
The central place in the square belongs to the monument to Prince Michael erected in 1882, which is also the first equestrian statue in Serbia reminiscent of classical antiquity and the Roman Empire.
The square is surrounded by various cafes and restaurants, so visitors can and relax and get refreshments after a day of hiking.
Knez Mihailova Street - Landmarks and attractions
Every city has a central pedestrian zone with cafes, bars and restaurants, street performers, and museum exhibitions that attract tourists.
In the late 20th century, Knez Mihailova Street grew into the cultural center of the capital, housing the Belgrade City Library, galleries, and important institutions.
Belgrade is the Serbian capital of culture, education and science where all the major events of national importance are organized.
The Tourist Info Center is located at the beginning of Knez Mihailova Street, and there you can learn more about the current offer of cultural and other events, which depends on the period of the year.
Due to the protected old buildings of great significance for Serbian history, architecture, art, and culture, walking down Knez Mihailova Street feels like stepping into the past.
